As a little kid I dreamed of traveling back in time to meet my ancestors and fight alongside them in the French and Indian War and American Revolution. Above is an illustration of my German ancestor's bone powder horn from the 1700s, hand inscribed by him. His inscription at the top translates to "Whore King George," so I guess we know which side he fought on in the American Revolution!

This little-known aviation pioneer comes to life in the pages of this photo-packed historical biography. It is hard to imagine today the awe and excitement generated in the first decade of the 20th century by the earliest flying machines and their daring aviators. Trained personally by the Wright brothers in 1911, Fowler was the first official entrant in the $50,000 U.S. cross-country challenge sponsored by William Randolph Hearst and was the only one to fly from West to East in the competition. Fans of early aviation history will love following Fowler's bruising but remarkable coast-to-coast flight to the finish.
